Mission and Main Tasks


The mission of the Association of Professional Healthcare Chaplaincy of Latvia is to develop and maintain a system open to ecumenical and multifaith dialogue which provides professional training, support and resources for healthcare chaplains in their ministry.

One of its main functions is to certify a professionally trained healthcare chaplain and promote his/her further training and qualification. The other but not less important function is to educate society about the role and significance of the spiritual care within healthcare system and promote relationships between the Association and healthcare institutions as well as religious and other organizations.

The main tasks of the Association is:

  • the development of the professional standards of the healthcare chaplaincy;
  • the development of the programmes for professional training;
  • the development of the principles and procedures of the certification;
  • enabling professional training and personal growth for spiritual caregivers based on the professional standards and in contact with healthcare institutions and/or institutes for education;
  • evaluation, analyses and statistics of the ministry of healthcare chaplaincy;
  • collaboration with healthcare chaplaincy from other countries and organizing different activities concerning exchange of experience;
  • acting as a liason with churches and faith communities and faciliate their relationship with the Healthcare ministry;
  • developing possibilities of Healthcare chaplaincy becoming a registered healthcare profession;
  • promoting all kind of research concerning theological, spiritual and reflective matters in healthcare chaplaincy work.
